GOALBALL

Goalball is a team sport played by athletes who are blindfolded to ensure fairness, as some may have varying degrees of visual impairment. The game is played on an indoor court with tactile markings and features two teams of three players each. The objective is to throw a ball with bells embedded inside it into the opponent's goal while defending one's own goal. Goalball demands keen auditory senses, spatial awareness, and strategic teamwork, making it both physically and mentally challenging.

Classification System

Athletes in goalball are classified based on their level of visual impairment, ensuring equitable competition. The classifications are:

  • B1: Athletes with no light perception in either eye or light perception but inability to recognize the shape of a hand at any distance.

  • B2: Athletes with the ability to recognize the shape of a hand to a visual acuity of 2/60 or a visual field of less than 5 degrees.

  • B3: Athletes with visual acuity between 2/60 and 6/60 or a visual field between 5 and 20 degrees.

Teams must field at least one B1 classified player on the court at all times to maintain fairness.

Gameplay and Rules

Goalball matches consist of two 12-minute halves, during which players remain in their designated team areas and take turns throwing and defending. The ball, which weighs 1.25 kilograms and contains bells, is rolled or thrown across the court by players aiming to score while opponents use their bodies to block it. Players must rely on sound and the feel of the ball's movement to track and intercept shots.

Key rules include:

  • Silence Rule: Spectators and coaches must remain silent during play to allow players to hear the ball.

  • Eye Shades: All players wear eyeshades to ensure fairness, even those with partial vision impairment.

  • Substitutions: Teams can make substitutions during timeouts or between halves.

Scoring System

Points in goalball are awarded when a team successfully throws the ball into the opponent's goal, and the team with the highest score at the end of regulation time wins. If scores are tied at the end of regulation, extra throws determine the winner.
