SITTING VOLLEYBALL
Sitting volleyball is a modified version of traditional volleyball designed for athletes with lower limb impairments who play while seated on the floor. The sport requires quick reflexes, precise ball control, and effective communication among team members. Matches are played on a smaller court with a lower net, ensuring competitive and exciting gameplay.
Classification System
Athletes in sitting volleyball are classified based on the extent of their impairment, ensuring fair competition. The classifications include:
Minimal Disability (MD): Athletes with minimal impairments affecting their ability to play volleyball effectively.
Moderate Disability (MD): Athletes with impairments that moderately affect their playing capabilities.
Severe Disability (SD): Athletes with impairments significantly impacting their volleyball skills.
Teams must field players with a combination of MD and SD classifications to ensure balance and fairness on the court.
Gameplay and Rules
Sitting volleyball matches consist of up to five sets, with each set won by the first team to reach 25 points (with a minimum 2-point advantage). The sport follows similar rules to standing volleyball, including:
Service: Players must serve the ball from a seated position over the net.
Touches: Teams are allowed a maximum of three touches to return the ball over the net.
Blocking: Players can block incoming attacks at the net using both hands.
The fast-paced nature of sitting volleyball requires quick thinking and adaptability, as players must adjust their strategies to maintain control of the game.
