WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL
Wheelchair basketball is a fast-paced sport that mirrors the rules and gameplay of traditional basketball, with some modifications to accommodate the use of wheelchairs. Played on a standard basketball court with regulation hoops, the game features two teams of five players competing to score points by shooting the ball through the opponent’s hoop. Wheelchair basketball is high intensity, requiring exceptional upper body strength, coordination, and tactical awareness.
Classification System
To ensure fair competition, wheelchair basketball employs a classification system that assigns players a point value based on their physical abilities. These values range from 1.0 to 4.5 points, with lower points indicating a higher degree of physical impairment. For instance, a player classified as 1.0 may have significant limitations in trunk control and movement, while a 4.5 player has minimal impairment. During a game, the combined point total of the five players on the court for each team must not exceed 14.0 points. This system ensures a balanced level of play, allowing athletes with diverse abilities to compete equitably.
Gameplay and Rules
The rules of wheelchair basketball are similar to those of its able-bodied counterpart, with some adaptations. Players must dribble the ball after every two pushes of their wheelchair, maintaining the principle of dribbling. While physical contact between wheelchairs is permitted, actions that are deemed dangerous or excessive are penalised with fouls. This maintains the competitive integrity and safety of the game.
Scoring System
Scoring in wheelchair basketball follows the same principles as traditional basketball. Shots made from inside the three-point line are worth two points, while those made from beyond the three-point line earn three points. Free throws, awarded following certain fouls, are worth one point each. The objective is straightforward: outscore the opposing team by the end of the game.
What to Expect in the Paralympic Games

These nations bring a wealth of talent and experience to the court, with standout players who have proven their prowess in past competitions.
